The original ink painting of Smiting the Raven II has just been added to my Etsy shop. It’s a rare thing when I can tell you exactly where an idea came from so I wanted to share a little about this piece.
I created this piece based on the story of Coronis and Phoebus from Ovid’s Metamorphosis. Phoebus charged his raven with spying on his love Coronis but when the raven returned with news that she had been unfaithful, Phoebus took his anger out on the raven and turned him black for eternity.
I loved this story and it immediately conjured images of a white raven being comforted by a dead Coronis as the darkness spread through his feathers.
Metamorphosis is a long book which admittedly I found a challenging read but I can’t recommend it highly enough for any creative people looking for inspiration. There are several more pieces I would like to do based on my experience of this book -but for now I hope you enjoy this one.
